While Eric Beltz's work may depict events in America's deep past, the quality and materials of the work are decidedly contemporary. His drawings are executed in an extremely tight and clean manner belying their photographic sources. The hand laid paper is as white as the day it was made - there is no artificial aging of the paper, no antiquing . Additionally, the composition of the works has a photo-shopped quality, as if sources have been pulled from j pegs and manipulated in a computer. Stylistically, Beltz's work is somewhat indebted to history of comic books and the graphic novel.
Clearly, the artist is not interested in creating a pure deception. this fact is most evidenced by his melding of historical references that span from colonial to contemporary times. Most commonly 18th century founding Fathers are juxtaposed with references from 1960's psychedelic literary plot themes. It is this "mash-up" of American history that provides Beltz with his unique perspective. In any given art work, historical figures such as Benjamin Franklin or Sitting Bull may find themselves transported into a Carlos Castenada or Hunter S. Thompson like plot line.
